Food traceability and why it is essential for the food industry

Food traceability and why it is essential for the food industry

Food traceability means being able to trace a product throughout the food chain. This includes everything from production, processing, and packing to distribution.

Why food traceability is so important

Food traceability makes it easier and quicker for you to recall a food product if something goes wrong. When a problem arises, food has to be quickly withdrawn or recalled. Recalls rely on accurate traceability to stop an outbreak of food poisoning or injury. Whether the problem is identified by a customer, business, or government agency, an effective traceability system can help track and isolate contaminated products.

There are also many benefits to having a comprehensive food traceability system. Not only will it help protect your brand and customers by enabling rapid reaction to food recalls and withdrawals, but there are also additional benefits:

  • Increased brand trust and loyalty
  • Reduction in out-of-stock products
  • Improved customer satisfaction
  • Increased efficiency in managing disruptions
  • Lower costs through improved efficiencies
  • Compliance with regulatory requirements

What are the requirements?

For food businesses, Food Standards Code requirements vary depending on which stage of the food chain they operate.

For example, a food manufacturing business must develop a food recall system to ensure the safety of consumers, as well as know the source of food, its raw materials, additives, ingredients, and packaging. They must also keep production records, product volumes, batch numbers, distribution addresses, and other relevant documents.

On the other hand, food businesses, regardless of their position in the food chain must know the company from which they source food, including the name of the food and the name and address of the supplier. They are also expected to know what products are on the premises and the prescribed name or designation of the food.

Essentially, businesses should be able to trace food one step back and one step forward in the supply chain. With good systems in place, lives can be saved and more serious problems averted.
