SPOTLIGHT ON: Nathan Wardell, Managing Director of Packserv Australia

In this month's edition of the Food Safety Select Member Spotlight Series, we asked the Managing Director of Packserv Australia, Nathan Wardell, all about Packserv and its innovative packaging machinery and technical services. With more than 25 years in the industry and being the 3rd generation of his family in packaging, Nathan established Packserv and turned it into the successful company it is today servicing FMCG, Food & Beverage, Pharmaceuticals, and Cosmetic industries both in Australia and internationally.

What is the story behind the establishment of Packserv Australia?

When Packserv was born, it was designed to service the SME market with rental machinery and technical services, a small but well-respected player in the machinery and technical services space. However, in more recent years we have grown and expanded to incorporate our own design, building, and fabrication division, producing our own range of machinery and incorporating that into our automation division. We bring together the best brands and technology available, from local and international manufacturers to be able to provide complete turnkey solutions.

Tell us about Packserv Australia’s products and services and the problems it is solving for the Australian food industry.

Packserv is a proud Australian manufacturer of high-quality packaging machines. Our range includes machines for volumetric filling, capping, and container handling functions, including conveyors in-feed and out-feed tables. Operating Australia-wide, we also specialise in providing rentals for on-demand packaging equipment for filling, capping, labelling, printing, and sealing.

One of the biggest problems facing local Australian food manufacturers and packers is time… Often when a business realises it needs a piece of machinery (to take advantage of an opportunity) there can be a long 3 to 6-month wait to receive the equipment from the supplier. Packserv specialises in a quick response time, reducing the time to installation and the time to get the product to market. We leverage off our rental division and manufacture our own parts and equipment in-house enabling us to give our customers quick access to the required equipment when they need it.

The same problem exists with breakdown and technical support. We have technical teams ready on standby, with equipment, parts, and accessories to support our customers whenever there is a breakdown or maintenance is required. Our trained qualified technicians can be on-site the same day, with parts available (on the shelf, not the boat) which is a major point of difference when considering machinery and technical support from international suppliers.

Who are Packserv Australia’s food industry customers?

Packserv is a proud Australian manufacturer for small and medium-sized enterprises. We currently service and supply packaging equipment to a range of food industry customers, for example, The Food Company Pty Ltd, Cali Press, La Barre Olives Pty Ltd, Marley Spoon, New Food Solutions, Honest to Goodness, and Berger Ingredients (just to name a few).

Are your products affordable to small businesses?

The machinery we supply starts from less than $100 per week to hire, and less than $1000 per machine to purchase. Packserv is about to turn 15 years old and has helped literally hundreds of small businesses get products to market and launch new products.

How are your products helping businesses with food safety and compliance?

Our in-house designers, engineers and technicians have unrivaled technical know-how in all aspects of our machines, in addition to the requirements and considerations of different industry sectors. We have designed and manufactured our machines in Australia to ensure they satisfy our stringent standards for construction, quality, safety, performance, and reliability.

Our team of trained technicians provides complete training and support to all of our customers and are on call day and night. In fact, not only do we offer training and support, but we also guide all our clients through the process of GMP, help them adhere to the laws and recommendations of HACCP, Foodsafe and assist with making sure every product created on our machinery is top-notch and safe for human consumption.

What are some of the advantages of Packserv Australia’s products over its competitors?

As mentioned previously, the biggest advantage of choosing Packserv is our quality machinery, technical services, and how fast we can respond. Having the support of our diverse range of equipment and locally held stock, with local technical support, is a massive advantage and reduction of risk.

Some of the clients have production lines that can cost thousands per minute in downtime when something doesn’t work... The last thing you want to do is wait for technical support or for parts to be shipped from foreign countries. Packserv equipment is proudly Australian-made, and if we don’t make it, we have access to the best manufacturers that do.

The other thing Packserv offers is GTI or guaranteed trade-in, allowing our customers to upgrade as their needs change, and to be able to swap machinery around from our rental fleet to accommodate any changes required in their production facilities.

What sort of support is available to Packserv Australia’s customers?

Packserv currently has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane which means customers on the entire East Coast will be able to have quick access to onsite technical support the same day.

We regularly fly our technical support team right around Australia, as our technicians are in high demand with their diverse skill sets and experience.

Where can customers find Packserv Australia and what locations do you provide shipping?

We supply customers right around Australia and are shipping machines out of our warehouses every day.

We can set up, test, run, and send videos of machinery running to the client, then we pack, crate and freight equipment wherever a client needs. Tech support is available over the phone and online.

We can also set up machinery remotely and even fault find and conduct guided maintenance anywhere in the country.
