In the 3rd edition of the Food Safety Select Member Spotlight Series, we asked Safe Food Pro's Operations Manager, Daniel Brimelow about their digital food safety program solution making food safety compliance and management simple for more than 1100 food businesses across Australia, New Zealand, UK, USA, and the UAE. 

Comprising of an affordable app and plug-and-play computer software, Safe Food Pro is known for having plenty of great features that are not only making food safety more simple for food businesses, it is also helping businesses save time and money.

What is the story behind the establishment of Safe Food Pro and how did you become involved in the business? 

Safe Food Pro has grown to be the market leader for digital food safety, with over 1100 food operators across Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK and UAE using our software. Our mission is to 'Make Food Safety Simple’ and we are extremely proud of the progress we have made in such an important industry.

Originally developed in New Zealand by food-tech pioneer, Roger Harris, Australia first became interested in the platform after a meeting in November 2019.  We immediately saw the potential and being an ex-chef myself, I was amazed at the simplicity and ease of use of the platform – a must-have for any food business. 

Together, the Trans-Tasman teams collaborated to localise the solution to Australian standards, and then, as they say, timing is everything…..we released the platform to the market just as COVID hit our sunny shores – challenge accepted!

Who are Safe Food Pro’s customers? 

We have a variety of customers across the spectrum of the food sector - from small cafes to large sports and not-for-profit clubs as well as manufacturing clients, mining camps, hospitals, supermarkets, and service stations.  The solution is very versatile and can be applied and scaled to any food operation, regardless of size or function.

How is Safe Food Pro making food safety easier for the food industry?  

By digitising the paper trail, we have made reporting and recording simpler, with easy-to-use validation forms that frontline staff use on an App, that can be made available to staff on their personal devices or a centralised tablet or device.  This reports directly to a central admin dashboard, making life easier for senior staff as they can, at a glance, see what is being done, what is not, what needs actioning and who is completing the required recording forms – this transparency is not possible with current paper-based operations. 

Integrated into this solution is propriety hardware that can be applied to undertake automated temperature reads of all cold, frozen, hot storage and cooling and preparation processes.  This saves the average kitchen around ½ an hour a day in manual recording alone.

External and internal audits are a breeze with powerful reporting functions and summary reports that can be made available to an internal or external auditor before they come on site. This drastically cuts down auditing timeframes, allowing kitchen staff to focus on their core function, running the food operation.

What are Safe Food Pro’s most popular features?

Hands down, it is the Automated Temperature reading capabilities and the management control digital data enables.  

Further to this, the ability to schedule maintenance activities, give access to contractors to upload service reports, embed training programs and other resources, as well as monitor form completion in real-time, has proven to be very popular amongst our customers. 

Are Safe Food Pro’s products and services affordable for small businesses? 

The product is very affordable.  There are no setup costs and with a license fee starting from $4 a day, the solution is extremely cost-effective. We scale our pricing accordingly to accommodate multiple licenses and our enterprise customers.  Our hardware is a once-off investment and is competitively priced. 

Have you seen an increase in businesses turning to Safe Food Pro for automation and digitization since COVID-19?

At the time of our launch, no. Businesses were scrambling to “keep the lights on” for the better part of a year, but in recent months we have seen an increase in business appetite to tackle “business improvement” projects that will streamline workflows and create cost efficiencies.

Driving this renewed interest in automation and digitization has been due to several factors including reduced staff levels, cut working hours, and less staff availability, particularly in the hospitality industry.  

Providing a robust solution that is a breeze to use for management and workers, has seen our sales grow exponentially.

Safe Food Pro, which runs on all devices, is a simple “plug and play” solution with the software and hardware seamlessly integrated, for ease of use and quick staff adoption. 

Our platform contains a simple “follow the leader” style form structure that staff readily embrace – it takes the guesswork out of what tasks must be done each day, week and month. For managers, it allows real-time monitoring, and the escalation alert features assist management to ensure staff are on task.
